    Short Afro

Natural hair in a short afro style

This style is simple and sweet - great for the woman who is transitioning from relaxed to natural hair. As will all types of natural hair, a short afro should be moisturized and conditioned and taken care of to encourage its growth. Photo © Hongqi Zhang (aka Michael Zhang) | Dreamstime.com

    Twist Out

Natural afro textured hair in a twist out style

To achieve this look with natural hair, the hair should be twisted after washing and conditioning ( a twist is like a braid, but it uses two strands instead of three). After the hair has tried, the twists should be gently taken apart and fluffed up to achieve a twist out. Picture © Andre Nadeau | Dreamstime.com

    Historical Photo

Historical Photo of Natural Black Hair

The painting above is of African women from various tribes who were brought as slaves to Brazil. This painting was done in 1835. Although the subject is a painful one, the painting clearly shows the variety of creative and unique natural hairstyles that these women wore.
